DUST FREE ENVIRONMENT

Tips for creating Dust-Free Environment
Dust-free living place is a must for healthy living in general and for dust-sensitive people in particular.  Dust-free living place helps you in reducing your miseries caused by allergic conditions and asthma as dust and dust-mites are some of the major factors that trigger allergies.

Dust in a living room or bedroom can contain allergic substances like molds, animal dander, dust mites and fibers.  Dust mites has the characteristic of thriving in summer and dying in winter and is usually found in bedding, carpets and upholstered furniture.  These mites can thrive even in winter if the rooms are warm and humid.  You must have seen particles floating in shaft of sunlight.  These are nothing but the dead mites and their waste products.  These waste products are the main culprits in provoking allergic reaction.

It is important to conduct routine cleaning of the living rooms at frequent intervals to maintain dust-free environment.  Scheduled cleaning also helps in protecting yourself from exposure to cockroaches – known for their contribution in development of asthma in allergic persons.

It may not be possible for you to control dust conditions of your work places and other outdoor places where you spend most of your day.  However, eliminating dust from your bedroom and living room is very much in your hands.  Reducing possible dust accumulating surfaces from the bed room is one of the best ways of controlling dust.

Apart from the medical treatment for dust allergy or asthma, following guidelines are issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for maintenance of dust-free environment.

Preparing dust-free room
  • Empty the room completely before cleaning
  • You must empty and clean all closets.  Store contents at any other place and seal closets.
  • Always use zipped plastic bags for storing clothing and boxes for storing shoes.  The shoe boxes must be kept off the floor.
  • If feasible, remove carpeting before cleaning
  • Remove all traces of dust on floor and woodwork by scrubbing and cleaning
  • Use water, oil or wax for wiping wood, linoleum floors or tiles
  • If you use linoleum, ensure that it is cemented to the floor
  • Windows and doors of the room should be closed till time the dust-sensitive person is ready for occupying room.
Maintenance of dust-free room
  • Always wear filter mask while cleaning
  • Clean room thoroughly at least once in a week
  • Use damp cloth or oil mop for cleaning furniture, floors, window frames, door tops etc
  • Vacuum upholstery and carpet at regular intervals using special filter in vacuum
  • Wash curtains at 130 Fahrenheit temperature
  • Air the room thoroughly
Flooring and Carpeting
All carpets trap dust and it is very difficult (nearly impossible) to control the dust in rooms having carpets.  Shag carpets are the worst for the dust-sensitive people when it comes to dust control.  To overcome this it is advisable to use tile, hardwood or linoleum floors.  Dust mite allergens in the carpets can be eliminated, up-to certain extent, by treating carpets with tannic acid. However use of tannic acid is not an alternative for removal of carpet.  Moreover, tannic acid can cause irritation to certain people and acid treatment is to be conducted repeatedly.

Beds and Bedding
Always keep only one bed in the bedroom.  Keep box springs and mattress in allergen-proof cover or in zipped dust-proof cover.  Scrubbing of bed springs should be done outside the bedroom.  Whenever another bed is required to be accommodated in the bedroom follow the preparation procedure.

Always use washable materials on the bed.  Bed sheets, bedclothes and blankets should be washed at frequent intervals.

Air Control
Air filters (added to a furnace or to room unit) may be helpful in reducing allergens levels.  HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorption filters or Electrostatic filters are found effective in removal of various allergens from the air.  However, if you have a electrostatic filter that is malfunctioning, it may be harmful for your lungs as it emits ozone.

House mites require high humidity to live and grow and with the help of dehumidifier you can reduce the humidity and achieve some help in controlling air.  Always clean the bedroom frequently using diluted bleach (1 cup bleach: 1 gallon water) solution.  You may also use other commercial products known for their characteristic of preventing growth of mold.  One of the disadvantages of using dehumidifier is that low humidity levels may irritate your lungs and nose.

Handling Pets
Fur and feathers are good surfaces for accumulation and spread of dust.  Always keep your pets away from the bedroom.  It is seen that persons allergic to dust mite are allergic to animals, in most cases.

Implementation of these guidelines may appear to be very difficult at the outset.  However, habit will make it easier for you.  You will surely happy with the results you will obtain by following these steps.
